What I Learned Mentoring Junior Engineers

Three habits that made the biggest difference for engineers I mentored this year.

Mentoring is less about having answers and more about asking the right questions at the right time.

The habit that mattered most: pairing on real incidents instead of toy examples. Debugging a live issue together teaches judgment in a way a tutorial never can.

Second, I started writing short design-review notes instead of verbal-only feedback, so mentees had something to revisit. Third: celebrating good questions publicly, not just good answers.
